AI and algorithm-based technologies disrupt our normal narratives about democracy and free exchange. The emergence of these technologies is not predestined or an inevitable conclusion to our projects as human beings, though they are often presented as so by those who benefit from their adoption and use. This panel takes on the challenges that such technologies mean for the inclusion of disabled people. Along with other social groups usually absent in the design and development of AI, disabled people are among the first casualties of technological adoption. Technologists rarely account for disabled lived experiences, knowledge, and community. In this workshop and panel discussion Ashley Shew will be hosting the Just Tech Fellow Jess Moore Matthews and the User Experience Design scholar Rua Williams in an engaging event about the making of AI and policy that do not exclude disabled people and the possibilities of accessing democracy in the next five years in the United States.
